What is an ONT

ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is an optical network terminal. As a terminal device of the access network, it can provide high-speed Internet access, IPTV, voice, WiFi and other services for home users.

We all know that the ONT is usually located in the user’s home, which is connected to the network upward through optical fibers and downward to various Internet devices such as TV and mobile phones. Today we learn about the types of Huawei ONTs.

Huawei ONT Types

According to different functions, Huawei ONTs can bare classified into the following types: traditional ONTs, intelligent ONTs, converged gateway ONTs, and 10G PON ONTs. Among them, traditional ONTs can be divided into bridge-type ONT and gateway-type ONTs.

Bridge ONTs

Bridge-type ONTs are only responsible for transparent transmission, providing users with Internet access and IPTV channels, and they can connect to the Internet only after successful dial-up on user equipment such as routers or PCs. Some bridged ONTs also support voice functions and can be connected to telephones.

A bridge-type ONT can connect to a wireless router downstream to achieve Internet access.

Huawei devices of this type include EchoLife HG8240H and EchoLife HG8010H.

Gateway ONTs

Compared with bridge-type ONTs, gateway-type ONTs can automatically allocate IP addresses for routing and forwarding, and can connect to the Internet without dial-up by users. In addition, some gateway ONTs also come with dual-band WiFi (2.4G Hz & 5G Hz) to provide wireless network.

Representative products are EchoLife EG8247H, EchoLife HG8546M.

Smart ONT

The biggest difference between a smart ONT and a traditional ONT is that it can be used with sensors to provide new functions such as real-time video monitoring, smart speed-up, and home control. Combined with the cloud platform and smart home APP, it can also realize remote control of smart homes.

10G PON ONT

The user-side rate of 10G PON ONT can reach gigabit, which can not only meet high-bandwidth services such as 4K/8K high-definition video, AR/VR, home cloud, and video calls for home users, but also provide up to 10 Gigabit private line access services. Echolife HN8245Q is the representative product.
